The Seafaring Women Aboard and Ashore Network (SWAAN) will be holding its first workshop on women and the sea in history next week, April 29th through May 1st, hosted by the Maritime History Archive on the campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
This workshop will convene scholars focused on women and other marginalized identities in maritime spaces to consider what has been the impact and what is the future of the expansion of maritime studies, particularly those driven by gender, on both scholarly and popular conceptions of maritime life. As part of the Lloyd’s Heritage Foundation-funded SWAAN Project, this discussion will be folded into a wider consideration of women’s work in modern maritime industries to produce resources for promoting recruitment, bettering retention, and encouraging training of women in careers in these spaces, including a second online conference to be announced later this summer.
For this event, we have an excellent slate of scholars presenting a variety of perspectives which you can review on our program here which also provides links to a version tailored for online guests.
We are pleased to have as our keynote speaker Dr. Julia Laite of Birkbeck, University of London, who will be presenting a talk titled, “Shanawdithit’s Canoe and Other Stories: Beothuk Women and Newfoundland’s Maritime History.”
We would like to invite you to participate, details for which may be found on our registration page here. Should participating online be your best options, we hope to have a lively discussion with our online guests, and would be pleased to have you attend in whatever capacity works for your schedule.
