Jessica Floyd received her PhD in Language, Literacy, and Culture at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Her dissertation, “Jib-booms, Barrels, and Dead-eyes: Singing Sex in Sea Chanteys,” consisted of critical analyses of unexpurgated sea chantey texts, each chapter speculating on the how and why early modern sailors used bawdy chantey narratives in their work songs. Through the intersection of history, gender/queer theory, and literary theory, Dr. Floyd interrogated sea chantey texts for what they might reveal about the culture of the early modern sailor, adrift on the high seas. Future projects seek to continue the work of mining unexpurgated sea chanteys to further investigate the early modern Atlantic world. Dr. Floyd is an assistant professor of English at Community College Baltimore County and currently serves as the coordinator of the department.
