Ian Stafford read History at St Andrews and subsequently obtained a masters with the thesis in Dominion Office Attitudes to Newfoundland. Qualified as a solicitor, he worked as a constitutional lawyer in capacity of Parliamentary Agent and latterly in the Government Legal Service advising on constitutional matters including involvement in EU law partly involving spending several years in Gibraltar. He has presented professional training papers and papers on military and naval matters at Museums and to other bodies. His interest in history is primarily related to the old Dominions and is currently researching on colonial navies. He has travelled widely in the former old Dominions.
