For the first time we’re trying to raise funds to help keep the website going in the future. We have set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to accomplish this.
When the website was founded (in 2012) as British Naval HIstory, Justin Reay was paying for the costs as it was his creation. In 2017, when I took over the project and it became GlobalMaritimeHistory, David Davies very kindly paid the costs to the UK hosting service for the first year, and I took over the costs subsequently. I use Dreamhost for hosting, and GoDaddy for the Domain Name and Domain Privacy.
In 2019 and 2020 I paid $119.40 (USD) for hosting, and in 2020 and 2021 I paid $155.88 (USD) for hosting. In Canadian Dollars, this is much more- my last one was over $220 CAD. In addition, the most recent bill from GoDaddy was $46.57 for Domain Name services and Domain Privacy and Protection.
I have set the goal for $300 as I believe this will be the approximate cost for hosting in 2023.
UPDATE: We were able to meet the fundraising goal within 48 hours due to very generous supporters. Thank you very much to
Dr Margaret Schotte
Dr Alex Clarke
Paul Brotcke
Andrew Cox
3 other donors who preferred to remain anonymous.
If excess funds are raised, they will be used for the following four possibilities, as appropriate
1) Used to create a prize for an essay “competition” on the website.
2) Used to pay for better hosting (faster hosting, really)
3) Held over for 2024’s hosting fees
4) Used to pay a professional web developer to improve the code on the website, particularly for the ADM 8 Database project.
Any help is very very much appreciated in keeping this project going moving forward.
I run an Instagram dedicated to reviewing maritime and naval history books. I would love to help raise awareness and more funds. Let me know if I can help.
Thank you for the offer- we have raised our goal for 2023.
