The American Geographical Society Library fellowship program was created to give scholars from the U.S. and abroad an opportunity to pursue their work in proximity to a distinguished collection of primary sources. Approximately 4-8 fellowships are awarded each year for periods of time usually ranging from two to four weeks. Fellowships are available for any qualified researcher, the main criteria for appointment being the merit and significance of the candidate’s proposal, the qualifications of the candidate, and the relevance of the project to the holdings of the Library. The fellowship selection committees look closely at the potential shown by the candidate for creative utilization of the Library’s resources.
The Library’s position within the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Libraries, its location near other major research collections, and its links with scholars and institutions in this country and abroad, offer a network of resources invaluable for AGSL fellows.
As the former research library and map collection of the American Geographical Society of New York, the Library has strengths in geography, cartography and related historical topics. The Library maintains a wide variety of hard-to-find primary and secondary resources. AGSL has an extensive collection of nautical charts produced by agencies around the world, many are online and more are available for in-person research.
In addition, researchers benefit from access to the UWM Libraries print and online collections during their residency. Not all Library materials are listed in the online catalog, but finding aids and professional staff are available to assist.
Complete fellowship descriptions and application process can be found on the AGSL website. Past fellowship recipients have included scholars of history, geography, cartography, climate, environmental studies, and literature.
Fellowships can last up to four weeks and provide a weekly stipend of $500.00 ($2,000 maximum) to help defray the travel and living expenses relative to the residency.
Deadline to apply is November 30, 2022. Awards will be announced in December 2022 for fellowships to be held during 2023.
See the AGSL website for more details on applying.
